The 2011 Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year Competition was held on Sunday 13 March at
the Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks. Fifteen competitors, aged between 14 and 20 years, each gave a 15-
minute recital before an appreciative audience. It was a wonderful day and the standard seems to
get higher every year, so picking a winner was not an easy task for the two professional
adjudicators Ruth Gerald and William Bruce.

The final result was a win for 17-year old cellist Margarita Balanas who received the
Sevenoaks Town Council Prize of £500 plus the opportunity of a concerto performance with the
Lydian Orchestra at their July concert; second prize, the Sevenoaks School Prize of £250, went to
pianist Daniel Evans; and third was violinist Eunsley Park , who won the Reid Sohn Prize of £100. The
two runners-up also receive £50 each from Sevenoaks Music Club plus the chance to play in their
Concert at the Ship Theatre in December. |
The Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year Competition, presented by Sevenoaks Three Arts Festival, was the brainchild in 1995 of June Clements, a long-standing member of the Festival's Executive Committee, and has grown in stature and prestige, moving in 1998 from its beginnings at Bradbourne School as part of the Festival in June to its present venue, Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks. |
