The Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year Competition, presented by Sevenoaks Three Arts Festival, was the brainchild in 1995 of June Clements, a long-standing member of the Festival's Executive Committee, and has grown in stature and prestige, moving in 1998 from its beginnings at Bradbourne School as part of the Festival in June to its present venue, Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks. The standard of the fifteen or so competitors each year has been astounding, and the difficult task by the excellent adjudicators of picking a winner has resulted in some truly outstanding young musicians gaining the title of Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year. Sadly June died in November 1996, but the Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year Competition remains as a thriving memorial.
Awarded at each Competition are as follows: the first prize - the Sevenoaks Town Council Prize - of £500 plus the chance to play a concerto with the Lydian Orchestra, also founded by June Clements; Sevenoaks School Prize of £250; and the Reid-Sohn Prize of £100. In addition, in recognition of June's outstanding contribution to the musical education and development of the young people of Sevenoaks, the Sevenoaks District Arts Council present the Young Musician Competition winner with a silver June Clements Memorial Medal each year, following the concerto performance .
The 2012 competition will be held on Sunday 11th March
